The Department for Work and Pensions has launched a new project to assist individuals receiving Personal Independence Payment or Disability Living Allowance in returning to work. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has launched a new project to assist individuals with musculoskeletal disorders such as back pain and arthritis.
17 NHS districts will share a £3.5 million cash increase to study novel treatments for musculoskeletal disorders (MSK). 646,000 individuals are off work due to MSK problems, accounting for about one-fourth of the record 2.8 million persons receiving long-term sickness benefits.
Funding is part of the Labour Party government’s Plan for Change, which aims to boost growth, put more money in people’s wallets, and bring the NHS back on track. Alison McGovern MP, Minister for Employment, stated: “For far too long, individuals who are unable to work due to health concerns have been overlooked and refused the assistance they need to recover and return to work.
“It stifles our economy and prevents those who want to advance in life from realizing their full potential.” This multi-million-pound funding increase ensures that musculoskeletal patients throughout the nation get the care they need, as we provide clinical leaders with the tools they need to innovate, get people off waiting lists, and get Britain back to work.
Andrew Gwynne, Minister for Public Health and Prevention, said, “With prevention, early detection, and treatment, we know that the 17 million people with musculoskeletal issues in England could better manage their conditions, improving their quality of life and allowing them to return to work.”
“Through the Plan for Change, the government is taking decisive action to drive down waiting lists, improve treatment options and boost the economy.” Several of the 17 ICB locations spearheading the delivery of this programme also host NHS England’s Further Faster 20 programme and the Government’s recently announced WorkWell programme, implying that people with MSK conditions will benefit from a combined approach of reduced waiting lists combined with intensive and personalised employment support.
